You may love them, you may hate them, but you can't deny that the University of Texas makes a lot of money in sports. The Longhorns' basketball and football programs pack the stands and bring in over one hundred million sports dollars every single year.
Major conferences sign contracts with television broadcasters for such large sums that many athletic departments receive huge checks for these rights. Many make more than they need to pay for athletic expenses and can give money back to the school. For some schools, this can be quite a windfall.
The largest contracts are signed for football rights by the BCS conferences. Football makes a majority of the income for many of these universities athletic departments and can come to over ten million dollars for many programs. These larger football conferences usually get much more than the smaller ones receive.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) negotiates and sells the right to the March Madness basketball tournaments. This generates about half a billion dollars annually and the NCAA pays their member schools for these rights. Basketball is just below football when it comes to the sports generating the most income.
Fans are usually eager to see their favorite teams play and waiting lists to see these contests are not uncommon. Ticket sales are another large source of income for an athletic department. Season passes can be purchased for most sports and are a major source of income for many schools.
As a general rule, football and basketball make most of the money for an athletic department. Most of the schools at the top of the list of college rankings for athletic departments use this income to pay for the other school sponsored sports. In terms of revenue, school sports are now a big business.
