Almost anyone you ask will tell you that Japanese is a very complex language to learn. Indeed, it is not simple, it is nuanced and lyrical and has many subtleties that are not readily apparent to a western language speaker. It is, however, a rich and fascinating language and you will eventually become used to its rules. The problem for some people is that they think Japanese is so hard they never give themselves a chance to learn it. What you have to realize is that everyone has the ability to learn several languages! You do have to devote a certain amount of time and hard work into it, though. Just make up your mind that you will become fluent in Japanese, and you can make it a reality. If you read and apply some of these tricks, you can make your Japanese study a little simpler.
Repetition is the key. Whenever possible, try to repeat, in Japanese, the words that you use in everyday talk. Try to make this a part of your thought pattern. This method is more effective than it seems, first of all it is simple but it trains your mind to identify things and automatically produce the Japanese word or phrase from what you see and hear. As you work on this, you will get faster at it. If you ever decide to travel abroad to Japan this method will really be helpful because you have already conditioned your mind to make all of the connections so communicating won't be much of a problem for you. This method really can enable you to interpret Japanese words when you hear them and name any given object when you need to.
If you want to learn Japanese, you have to learn its alphabet. Don't worry about spelling at first, but become familiar with symbols and how they are pronounced. If you have difficulties, you can then write down something that is at least an approximation of what you are trying to say to someone. This technique will help if you go to Japan before you are fluent in the language. By doing this, you will be learning how to read in the new language as well as being able to communicate by writing things down phonetically.
One trick you can use to speed up your learning process is to use any Japanese recordings or downloads at times when you are not focusing on learning. Yes, there is quite a lot to be said to learning a language directly through lessons and practice drills. There is also something to be said for learning subconsciously. You have nothing to lose by trying this method; simply let your programs play on your drive to work, when you're at home or anytime. This is a very easy way to learn, as you don't have to do any conscious work, but it can really help. This is the way your mind works; a lot of what it takes in is automatic, so why not use this to your advantage? You might even try playing the lessons while you sleep!
Once you put your mind to it, you will see that you can learn Japanese in many different ways. These are just a few hints that you can use to help make sure that the things you want to learn are better able to stick in your brain. There's no denying that Japanese is a challenging language; this is especially the case for Westerners. Hopefully these hints will help you retain some of the language that you want to learn.
