One of the most widely used methods to judge a college or university's quality is a <a href="http://www.eduregistry.org/">university rankings</a> list. However, different publications may use different criteria in making their judgements. So it is best to determine which common methods of assessment are used in compiling these lists.
Figures matter to those who put together these lists. The figures themselves have normally come from the institutions being ranked. Whether from their online or printed materials, colleges regularly make their statistics widely available, and these statistics provide the lists with an objective basis to rank the various institutions.
Such statistics include the SAT/ACT results and the GPA of high school diplomas held by those matriculating. Also assessed is the percentage of students who graduate and the percentage of those who transfer. Student statistics, though, only tell part of the story.
Faculty numbers are also assessed, such as student:faculty statistics. Faculty are also assessed qualitatively, on the basis of their academic achievements. This can be gauged on the rate they are published to the amount of funding for research they acquire.
The lists that are published are often a key factor in college selection for many prospective students. Aside from the underlying necessity of statistical data required of all lists, though, other methods used to assess how colleges should be ordered on a list vary from list to list. This is important to bear in mind when scrutinizing such lists to make a choice for which college to attend, a decision which cannot be taken lightly given the cost involved.
The only practical way to make use of the university ranking lists is to read several of the lists and check how your ideal college performs on each of them. In this way, you are getting a variety of reviews from differing sources. This will ensure your decision has a solid authoritative basis.
