Ultrasound technicians, who are also called medical sonographers, earn a good living even with the state of the economy as it is after the Great Recession. The medical industry has kept its stable growth pattern simply because medical care is a necessity at any time.
Yet another good piece of news about becoming an ultrasound technician is that there are many paths toward becoming one. Individuals can either get a formal education on diagnostic medical sonography, get trained in a medical facility, or get both education and training. It must be emphasized that either one of these paths of entry is accepted by employers with certification as a registered medical sonographer considered as a definite advantage.
There are many accredited colleges and universities offering formal education in diagnostic medical sonography. You can go for either a 2 year associate degree or the 4 year bachelor's degree, and either one should increase your chances of gaining employment. However, companies will choose the person who has a 4 year degree over the other one, even though in terms of work experience they might be on an even keel.
A professional who's already employed in the field can enroll in the year long program leading to vocational certification, which will help when he or she wants to apply for jobs that pay better. You can also chose the route of direct training over formal education to be a diagnostic medical sonographer. A certificate from the ARDMS is often accepted for hiring because it shows that one is competent in this area.
Many avenues for accredited training also exist. Individuals can train in medical facilities like hospitals, clinics and physician's offices. Take note that many training programs prefer applicants who already have a few years of work experience in the healthcare industry or who have high school diplomas with focus on health, science and mathematics.
Those that finish the formal or hands- on education training programs are advised to take the ARDMS conducted certification examination. It pays to posses the license as an American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography license, although none of the states in the Unites States require a license as a diagnostic medical sonographer. However, this is proof of one's competency as a professional in a highly-demanding field of work.
In addition, other organizations that certify individuals exist around the world. For example, Cardiovascular Credentialing International offers proper credentials to cardiac sonographers who meet the designated qualifications. Similarly, the American Registry of Radiological Technologist too offers certification for individuals who qualify as breast and vascular sonographers. As with any field, there is a general umbrella term of "ultrasound technician," and within that fall specialists who focus on more specific sonography.
The best diagnostic medical sonographers will also possess considerable personal skills, such as being able to communicate well, having a steady hand, and wanting to further their education.
