Institutions Of Higher Learning That Hold Top Spots In University Ranking Tables

by Tom Addison

Choosing which university to go to can be a bewildering experience, due to the rang of opportunities facing the prospective student. There are several ways of sifting through those opportunities to find suitable choices. One of the best is university ranking tables.

Of the tables that are held in high regard, the Times Higher Education (THE) and Quacquarelli Systems (QS) lists loom large. These two were partners in putting together lists, but differed on criteria. Since 2009, they operate independent listings.

Reading the lists, it's clear which universities are seen as worthy of inclusion in the highest ranks. For THE, Oxford ranks 6th in 2010 and 4th in 2011, while Cambridge went from 3rd in 2010 to 6th in 2011. On QS, Oxford went from 6th in 2010 to 5th in 2011 and Cambridge held 1st in both 2010 and 2011.

The American state of Massachusetts is home to two elite institutions, Harvard and MIT, and the lists reflect this. Harvard has been ranked 2nd on QS for both 2010 and 2011, while with THE it has went from 1st in 2010 to joint 2nd with Stanford in 2011. MIT placed 5th in the QS 2010 list, rising to 3rd in 2011. On THE's list, MIT got 2nd place in 2010 and 7th in 2011.

Stanford, which tied with Harvard for 2nd place in 2011 for THE, had held 5th place the previous year. QS ranked them 13th in 2010 and 11th in 2011. Yale had a decline on both lists, going from 9th in 2010 to 11th in 2011 by THE's reckoning, and saw QS reduce them from 3rd in 2010 to 4th in 2011.

It will come as no surprise that Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, Oxford and Cambridge would rate highly on ranking tables. These institutions are renowned as elite providers of tertiary education. But it is handy to have a breakdown of how that quality is measured before making a decision as to which university is right for you, and that is what the likes of THE and QS provide.
