There are two main popular rankings for top US colleges. The first is from the US News & World Report, which has been known for its ranking of US colleges for the longest time. The US News ranking is no longer the monopoly, as Forbes now also publishes its own college ranking The two rankings use different methodologies for their ranking, which means that there are two perspectives through which US colleges are viewed.
Where the US News ranking is based on various categories under which the colleges are grouped, the Forbes list includes all colleges in the same list, irrespective of whatever category they might fall under. This in essence, means that for there are colleges that are not compared with each other on the US News ranking.
In trying to offer an alternative, Forbes argues that a student will ultimately attend only one college, despite its category, and therefore a same-list ranking of all colleges is more logical, which is the approach they take - that of a college student.
The Forbes ranking, dubbed America's Best Colleges, is based on education quality provided by the institutions and the achievement of students in these colleges. The Forbes ranking is prepared by Forbes Inc. with the help of Dr. Richard Vedder, who is an economist, as well as the Center for College Affordability. CCAP tries to look at colleges from the point of view of the student, as seen in their methodology.
Typically, potential college students will be curious about how good their professors will be, and whether attending a particular college will increase their chances of success. When they have to borrow money to pay for college, they will also want to know how deep in debt this will get them. The Forbes' list also looks at the chances that students have of graduating within four years, and whether the colleges are recognized, in the national level or global level.
A quarter of what counts for the Forbes list is the conclusions drawn from students' evaluations of their college instructors and the courses. RateMyProfessor.com is the website where these evaluations are carried out. The number of significant personalities who are alumni of these colleges count for another 25% of the consideration The other half is based on how much students owe in terms of debt once they graduate, how many actually graduate within four years and the number of individuals, whether students or faculty, who attain national awards.
The top three schools in the US News national university ranking are Harvard, Princeton and Yale University. Williams College comes first in the category of liberal arts colleges, followed by Amherst College and Swarthmore College in third place. The ranking also includes categories such as great schools at great prices, regional universities, regional colleges, up-and-coming schools and many more categories.
Forbes list features Williams College coming in at first position, with Princeton University in second place. Third, fourth and fifth places are occupied by Amherst College, United States Military University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology respectively. With these two rankings, students and their families are better placed to make the right choice for college attendance, whatever their preferences are.
