Earning A Green MBA Is Good For You And For The Future Of Our Planet!

by Michelle Conner

Those who are interested in getting their MBA degree are discovering a new possibility besides such standard fare as Accounting and Economics. It's an MBA in a discipline called Sustainability; i.e. examining the economic aspects of investing in replenishable resources and green technology. A number of universities, both online and on campus, have programs devoted to it, and it is growing. It's something that those looking at online MBA degree program materials probably already know.

As someone with even the slightest green consciousness is starting to realize, the world is facing an ecological crisis of epic proportions. The planet can not simply replace the resources as fast as the human population is depleting it. Those who getting their MBAs in Sustainability are studying the economic costs of replacing current wasteful methods with ones that are "sustainable;" i.e. easily replenishable.

How they do it is to divide problems into thee particular categories, entitled "the Triple Bottom Line," defined as economic, environmental, and social sustainability. The current oil crisis is categorized as an economic issue. Global warming is considered environmental, while overpopulation is a sustainability matter.

Those interested in this "Green MBA," still have to go to college and get an appropriate undergraduate degree. From there, they still have to go on and pass the GMAT before enrolling in an MBA program of choice. What the post-grad candidate should now look for is a school that offers an actual MBA in some form of Sustainability. There are a growing number of both on campus and online colleges that offer these programs, and the number is expected to be growing. As you make your plans, start with some good online education sources.

Because of this, it's highly advisable to do a little research to establish which schools really offer legitimate Sustainability curriculum from those that are just the johnny-come-latelies. When talking to a college career counselor, don't be afraid to ask how long the school in question has been offering the specialty, the backgrounds of key educators at the school and testimonials from graduates.

After finding the right school, one should expect not only the standard post-grad load in established business courses, but an equally important load in the ecological sciences and related topics. It should also be noted that having an MBA in Sustainability is not the same thing as having a Masters in Environmental economics. The latter is a STEM occupation, heavy on technical solutions. Sustainability is from the economic side.

There is also some controversy developing over this career tract. More traditional business graduates feel this career tract is should really not be considered an advanced business education. They feel those going for an MBA should only be concentrating on only economic matters; the world's ecology has nothing to do with it.

As it stands, many realize the economic costs of a global ecologic disaster would make something like the BP Oil spill in the Gulf Coast look picayune in comparison. The growth of courses online for students to engage in MBA programs in this arena will mean a better world for all of us.
