Another Way Of Looking At College Ranking

by Roger Gray

Colleges in the country are officially ranked and the list is updated every year, but it is not a sufficient reference for students who want to know what college they will enter to pursue their studies. Luckily there are a number of college ranking guides that are produced by students themselves.

In this version, the top criteria for the ranking are student comfort and contentment. What the students did was to broaden the issues in the grading system, in addition to the academic standards. Colleges were ranked from the perspective of the students past and present, and are independent of and separated from the influence of the school. If you search the internet you will find sites where students have given colleges ranking based on many criteria including academics, dining (off campus and on), housing, social life, transportation and more.

What is clear is that the students' concerns are not limited to the academic situation alone, but of equal importance to them are other issues that will have an impact on their personal circumstances and situations, and these they can get derive their own conclusions from the compartmentalized rankings prepared precisely for the purpose.

To illustrate, a student driving his own car will place at the bottom of his list the transportation conveniences in a particular college, and will focus his attention more on parking availabilities in the school. So an art student will not attach as much importance to the school's technological facilities as the information technology student, in the same manner that the latter will hardly care about the size and contents of the school's museum.

Female students are more likely to be concerned about a college ranking for security on campus and be especially interested in the levels of campus police but may not be bothered if the school has a low college ranking for the football coaching.

Onsite visits and evaluation of the prospective schools if possible would also be helpful in verifying and confirming the information and surveys gathered in the internet and other sources. This will enable you to confirm, or refute the claims made by the college ranking yourself and also offer you the chance to see if the college actually feels right for you before you accept a place.
