Colorado Nursing Schools: Nursing Schools Benefit From Online Classes in Push For More Students

by John Roney

An associate degree also known as the tertiary degree is an entry level degree in the field of medical science. This type of degree in universities is awarded by the community colleges. It may also be offered by different nursing schools. Many of the four year colleges also offer this particular degree program. Students who have completed this particular degree are eligible to sit in examination of registered nurse and become registered nurse. Many of the hospitals have altered the curriculum in order to provide such associate degrees. Many of the nursing schools have fast track programs in which they give students associate degree in nursing within two years. This might be equivalent to the bachelor's degree.

Additionally, nursing careers also span many non-clinical functions, such as medical and nursing research, forensic research, nursing education, medical insurance, serving medical, pharmaceutical and healthcare companies and so on. In the United States, it is estimated that nursing careers of about 50 percent of nurses start at hospitals of all hues. Indeed, hospitals remain the largest employers of registered nurses. But there are other avenues for promising nursing careers, some of which are enumerated below:
o Working in specialized healthcare units and long-term care facilities (hospice nursing, standalone nursing homes, patient rehabilitation, etc.).
o Assisting medical specialists like surgeons, ophthalmologists, obstetricians and others.
o Nursing-on-call on private duty for home patients (home health agencies).
o Serving in outdoor community health clinics.
o Educating aspiring nurses as teachers.
o Engaging in medical, nursing and forensic research, either self or as assistants.
o Independent nursing careers like legal nurse consultants, medical writers, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists and so on.
o Serving international organizations, like United Nations, Red Cross, etc.
o Serving insurance companies and managed care centers.
o Serving in statutory bodies responsible for hospital regulations.
o Serving companies engaged in healthcare and medical business.

A shortage of nurse educators, according to what Mountain State University Orlando Executive Director Randy White reportedly told the Orlando Business Journal, hasn't been addressed nearly as much as a nursing shortage itself. Mountain State University itself has added a new master's degree program with a concentration in education, the Orlando Business Journal article noted. In New Mexico, ITT Technical Institute in Albuquerque is one of at least six institutions to have recently added new programs in nursing, according to a May article in New Mexico Business Weekly. The new ITT Tech nursing program, for one, is an associate's degree program where some non-core courses might be taken exclusively in class, exclusively as distance learning courses, or through combination distance learning and in-classroom instruction, the ITT Tech website shows. At Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., the School of Nursing webpage shows that it offers an accelerated masters degree program where students can spend blocks of time on campus and receive instruction via distance learning. Regis University in Denver, Colorado, provides undergraduate and graduate offerings whereby students can participate in courses online or on campus.

The Colorado Nursing Schools also offers a CHOICE (Connecting Health Occupations with Innovative Curriculum and Experience) bachelor of science in nursing where students attend classes on campus twice weekly during evenings and participate in clinical experiences during weekends. Vanderbilt University's nursing school also has arrangements with colleges and universities throughout the country where students can combine a liberal arts degree with studies toward a masters in nursing. Regis University is also one of some 230 institutions throughout the country that provide accelerated bachelor's in nursing programs for individuals who hold bachelor's degrees in other disciplines.

There are number of programs to choose from and you should always opt for a program and institution that best suites you. Many of the institutions nowadays have training programs over the internet. That means now you can complete your certification online and enter this field as a certified nursing assistant.
