Which Vocational Jobs Will Be Hiring In The Future?

by Kendra Jaingam

It's no secret that today's job market is difficult, but that doesn't mean that there aren't opportunities out there for people with the right skills. And, if you're interested in pursuing vocational education, the news gets even better because many of the most-popular trade school careers are in the fields projected to experience the greatest growth over the next decade. With this being the case, it's no wonder that enrollment at American vocational schools and technical colleges is skyrocketing.

We've all heard the reports on how the Technology and Medical fields are projected to dramatically expand over the remainder of the decade, but did you know that there are plenty of other professions that will be adding tons of new jobs as well? Per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' latest projections, the 50 fastest-growing occupations also include vocationally-trained positions in the Legal and Finance industries, as well as many of the skilled technical fields traditionally associated with trade schools (e.g. HVAC mechanics). For those people with professional certificates or degrees from accredited trade school programs, the future has never been brighter.

Which Vocationally-Trained Professions Are In The Greatest Demand?

The following section discusses those trade school careers that appear on the list of the 50 fastest-growing occupations between now and 2018.

Computer Network Systems Analysts

The need for people proficient in the design, analysis, testing, and evaluation of computer network systems continues to increase as our society becomes more integrated with technology. This is particularly good news for anyone who is interested in pursuing vocational training in this rapidly expanding career field. With greater-than 50% growth in new jobs over the next seven years, Network Systems Analyst is projected to be the second-fastest growing occupation in the nation over the next seven years.

Physician's Assistant

The aforementioned boom in the health care industry is expected to created a massive demand for Physician Assistants over the next decade. These assistants are invaluable team members in a wide range of health care facilities, from hospitals to private practices and perform numerous patient-care tasks under the supervision of a physician. The Physician Assistant occupation is projected to grow at the seventh-fastest rate of any profession, adding nearly 30,000 new jobs nationally over the next decade for a 39% increase.

Skin Care Specialist

Also called Estheticians, Skin Care Specialists are licensed in numerous techniques that treat and improve the appearance of their patient's facial skin. Most work in spas or salons, and many open their own businesses after gaining enough experience. This classic trade school career ranks eighth on the list of fastest growing professions with a projected 38% growth in jobs.

Physical Therapy Assistants and Aides

Ranked 11th and 17th respectively on the list of fastest-growing occupations, Physical Therapist Aides and Assistants help patients rehabilitate from injury or other physical problems. Aides typically work under the supervision of either a Physical Therapist, or the Physical Therapist Assistant. The national growth rate for these two occupations is expected to be over 33% over the next seven years.

Dental Hygienist and Dental Assistant

Much like the physical therapy field, the need for dentistry is expected to grow dramatically over the next several years leading to a high demand for Dental Hygienists and Assistants. These two positions are vital to any successful dental practice, and represent the 12th and 14th-fastest growing occupations with growth rates of 36% each.

Veterinary Technicians and Technologists

America's love for its pets is not expected to change anytime soon and, for that reason, the demand for professionals who can assist in the treatment and diagnosis of disease in animals will be high in the future. Veterinary Technologists and Technicians rank 13th on the Bureau of Labor Statistics list, expecting an increase of over 29,000 jobs (36%) between now and the end of the decade.

Medical Assistant

Not only the clinical, but also the administrative tasks performed by Medical Assistants are in high demand as health care facilities expand around the country. Always a popular career choice among vocational students, this occupation will add approximately 165,000 jobs nationally over the next seven years for a health 34% increase.

Occupational Therapy Assistants and Aides

Another field with similar growth projections to physical therapy is occupational therapy. Helping patients return to work by rehabilitating them from mental or physical issues, Occupational Assistants and Aides are integral parts of an occupational therapy practice. The need for both of these occupations is expected to rise by over 30%, and both vocations can be learned during two-year trade school programs.

With a growth rate approaching 28%, this occupation is expected to be the 32nd-fastest growing during the next several years.
