Pell Grant is an educational aid sponsored by the US Department of Education for undergrad students from financially weak families. To apply for the grant a student has to fill and submit the FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid form, which serves as the Pell grant application.
The Pell grant is considered an ideal model for educational aid and numerous other grants and aid have been established with similar models. The grant was named after Sen. Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island who was one of the creators of Basic Educational Opportunity Grants, which was later renamed as Pell Grant. A grant, unlike student loans, doesn't need to be repaid.
All that an aspiring applicant needs to apply is to fill out and submit the Pell Grant application form - FAFSA. There are several ways of obtaining and submitting the form. One, you can have the form failed to you and you can fill and mail it back. Second, you can go to their website to download and fill-out the form, then mail it back through post. The third option is to fill out and submit the form online. Obviously, online Pell Grant application is the fastest means of getting your application through.
In the website, you are required to generate a PIN (Personal Identification Number) to authenticate your from. If you are a dependent, your parents or guardian are also required for a PIN. The processing may take two to three weeks but the applicant can always check the status of the application online and generate the Student Aid Report.
There are 5,400 participating schools for Pell Grant in the United States. The actual amount of the grant depends on the calculated EFC, tuition fees, the duration of the course etc., the maximum amount is in the range of five thousand dollars. If there's an excess of the grant, the student can always claim it from the school.
