The benefits of home schooling, as compared to traditional schooling, are numerous. For this reason, many parents are choosing to home school their children. Some of the benefits parents appreciate are: instilling your beliefs and values in your children, keeping track of their progress, and daily involvement in how and what they learn. Home schooling isn't something you can decide to do overnight. You must think it over carefully and weigh the pros and cons. This article will give you tips about some critical things to consider.
Many parents and children find that home schooling is more demanding than they expected, which is why it's good to get a preview of it before committing to it. That's why it's a good idea to use vacation time, such as the summer to give it a test run. It really won't take that long for you and your kids to find out what a home schooling schedule will be like -a few days every week or perhaps several weeks in a row should be all it takes. You might come away from this experience with a different opinion of home schooling, or you might not. This is way to show you the experience of home schooling so it's not just theory anymore.
If you're going to teach your child at home, you have to consider not only the academic side of things but also discipline. Just as teachers in a traditional classroom must be able to hold the kids' attention and enforce certain rules, so you'll have to do these things as a parent-teacher. Children must be convinced that even though they're at home, they have to give their full attention to the assignment you're giving them. Depending on the personality of your child/children, this may or may not be a problem for you. You have to make a strict rule about games, electronic devices and other distractions not being permitted when kids are learning or studying.
You need to get a handle on time management strategies if you are going to be a home school parent. Even though it may seem there's more time than there would be at a traditional school, because there's no commuting back and forth, you'll probably find it challenging to fit everything in. Other responsibilities in your home will surface and cut into your time. However, home schooling isn't a part-time responsibility. It requires a full-time effort on your part. If you set a fixed schedule for each day, much like a traditional school, you will find it much easier to get everything done. The first thing on your time schedule should be when "school" starts and when it ends. True, the children aren't leaving the house, but they need to know when to be at their appointed places and ready for school.
There's no doubt that being taught at home is a much different experience than going to a public school. There will be a lot of new things for you to absorb and learn as you begin teaching your children at home. Beyond the fact that it may be a challenge sometimes, you will enjoy knowing that you are playing a major role in the education and development of your children.
