Earning an Online Degree: Worth the time effort?

by William Westbrook

You might be wondering if online colleges offer the same educational value that is offered by traditional universities. The fact is that more and more of the traditional universities are offering online degrees. In order to remain competitive and attract students, it was something that they had to do. In the future, it is likely that all universities will offer at least some courses over the Internet, because it is such a popular choice.

Why is it popular? Convenience is one big thing. Particularly for someone that already has a job. It is much easier to sit down in front of the computer after work than it would be to get to a campus. Flexibility is another issue. Traditional campuses offer specific classes on specific days, at specific times. Online colleges offer classes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Moms and dads can advance their education without hiring a babysitter. Working parents are some of the busiest people. It is something of a balancing act. Trying to fit in time to take a class at the local community college is nearly impossible. Distance learning programs fit perfectly.

But, are online degrees equivalent to those that you might earn at a traditional institution? The best way to determine the answer to that question is to talk to people who are currently working in your field of choice. For example, if your hope was to land a job with IBM, you could call their hiring staff and ask their opinions. All jobs have qualifications. Nothing would be more disappointing than to find out, after the fact, that your degree does not allow you to meet those qualifications.

Are online colleges right for everyone? It really depends on the person's learning style and the amount of self-motivation they have. For some students, it is ideal. Others need more teacher interaction. Of course, there are universities that offer on line and traditional classes. Most institutions offer teacher/student interaction, even if it is by e-mail.

If you are a busy person, you might want to consider how much time you have to devote to this program, as well. Online degrees do take time. There are some scammers that would tell you otherwise, but as long as you enroll at an accredited university, you will need to spend some or all of your free time studying.

Some students need the structured environment and the "obligation" of going to class in order to complete a program. On the other hand, a busy person is not likely to have the time to attend a traditional campus either. The bottom line is that online colleges offer the opportunity of higher education to people that might not otherwise be able to achieve their goals in the traditional classroom environment.
