There are a lot of different types of private schools. For parents thinking about taking their kids out of the public system, that can be overwhelming. Instead of sending the kid off to the place down the street, they need to know what type of school and education they want for their child, and what is available.
The first major choice is religious of secular. A religious education is a popular choice for many, with educational facilities available for most major religions. In larger cities less common religions may also have academies. Offerings change by region, depending on what the most common religions are in an area. These facilities often teach not only standard academics but also religious theory, study, or history.
Those who prefer to keep their kids away from religion or at least not educated fully in the system may choose secular schools. There are a wide variety of secular schools. Some are highly academic, others focus more on the arts. Because they aren't tied to any one religion they often don't teach it at all, or at most as a component of history or literature.
There are options where students go home every night after class and sports, just like their public school friends. These offer day school, and may be for students of all ages. Because students need to be able to get home every night, they are often located in the same general area as their students. They often don't offer busing for their students, because they may pull students from several communities.
The alternate to day is boarding. Some offer full boarding, with students on campus seven days a week, only going home for holidays and vacation. Others offer week boarding, with students going home on weekends. Boarding is usually only available for students after fourth grade, though some academies may board students as young as seven. Students may board at academies far away from home, even in a different country. Because they don't need to travel home, distance is rarely a concern.
There is also the choice of traditional or alternative education. Traditional is like the public system, though often more academically focused. Students learn the same subjects, with perhaps more depth and time spent, as the public system offers, with teachers leading classes speaking in the local language.
But there are also alternative systems. They may offer school only in a foreign language, or classes chosen and lead by students, or even let students have total control of their education. They may offer an on-campus version of un-schooling. Some parents prefer the alternative approach, and some places have highly successful students graduate. It depends on the student, though, and the parent's comfort with less traditional education.
Once the basic differences have been figured out, picking private schools gets easier. Parents know what they generally want for their children, educationally. Removing all the options that don't fit leaves a much smaller pile to pick from. With the extra choices gone, the right one is easier to find, and a good choice can be made for the student and the parents.
